insulinpumps.ca Adds Major Pharmacy Chains to Distribution Network

Oakville, Ont., January 22, 2014 – insulinpumps.ca has added more than 550 retail pharmacies to its distribution network following recent partnerships with Loblaw Companies and Overwaitea Food Group.

“These new partnerships expand our network to include most major pharmacy chains across the country. More importantly, they give Canadians more choice in purchasing their insulin pump supplies,” says Melany Hellstern, president of insulinpumps.ca, a national distributor of insulin pump supplies and diabetes management products.

The partnerships add about 460 pharmacies from Loblaw Companies, based in Brampton, Ont., and 100 pharmacies from Overwaitea Food Group, headquartered in Langley, B.C.

The Loblaw pharmacies operate under the Loblaw Pharmacy and DRUGStore Pharmacy banners and are inside supermarkets the company operates across Canada.

The Overwaitea pharmacies are all in British Columbia and Alberta, and also inside supermarkets. The pharmacies operate under the Overwaitea Foods Pharmacy, PriceSmart Foods Pharmacy, Cooper’s Foods Pharmacy, Save-On-Foods Pharmacy and Urban Fare Pharmacy banners.

Hellstern, who started insulinpumps.ca in 2006 with the goal of providing insulin pumpers across Canada with more product choices and greater access to insulin pump supplies, explains that pharmacies are the cornerstone to her company’s service approach.

“The vast majority of people with diabetes visit their pharmacy regularly for essentials such as insulin, test strips and medications, so it makes sense to purchase pump supplies there as well. Another thing to consider is that people have strong relationships with pharmacists and place a high level of trust in the advice they provide,” she explains.

The name “diabetes” is attributed to the famed Greek physician Aretaeus of Cappadocia who practised in the first century A.D. The word means “siphon,” which refers to the copious urine of uncontrolled diabetes.
